Abstract:

The purpose of this program was to complete the advanced development of the Very Long Delay Fuze VLDF and the Short Delay Fuze SDF and to fabricate and deliver a quantity of fuzes for service and environmental test to qualify the fuzes for engineering development. The Phase IV design emphasis was directed primarily toward development of two separate fuze systems which offer a high degree of safety and reliability and incorporate maximum design commonality to minimize manufacturing costs. The VLD and SD Fuzes were developed with common electronic components, safe and arm assemblies, booster, and outer housing hardware with both fuzes featuring high drag and free-fall environmental sensing systems as part of the prearm mechanization. The fuze digital circuit design and mechanical design were accomplished to maintain the Phase III modular packaging concept representative of a production-type fuze. Air Force environmental, air drop, and impact sled testing of 50 fuzes and Delco Electronics environmental test of 11 fuzes demonstrated suitability of the design and packaging concepts.
