Abstract:

The report has the twofold purpose of presenting a more complete analysis of the data than is possible without some basic search theory, and of obtaining from the data more reliable values of the parameters occurring in the theory than those derived from operations under combat conditions. The report deals with the ranges at which various targets can be seen under different conditions as regards such things as sun sea cloud and haze and with the probabilities that these targets will be seen. The results obtained are in good agreement with theory and consequently with those laboratory measurements which constitute part of the basis for the theory. The results provide information on which to base such decisions as number and sector assignments of lookouts scanning procedure to be employed and force requirements for a given search task.
