Abstract:

A single slurry vortex spinning apparatus was developed to form a multi-component yarn. The design of the apparatus was based on developments in the textile industry to produce yarn by means of open-end spinning. A slurry of dispersed fibers was transferred to the spinning zone of the device, and as it passed through a rapidly rotating tube, the hydrodynamic action twisted the fibers into a yarn. The device was demonstrated with uncrimped textile staple, and integral mixtures of high modulus fibers with the lower modulus synthetic fibers. The yarn issuing from the rotating tube was snubbed by a roller, washed free of the suspending liquid, and collected on a take-up drum. A summary of open-end spinning systems described in the literature is included. Also, the equations required to describe the hydrodynamic process are presented.
