Abstract:

The program, is to demonstrate successful use of brittle materials in demanding high temperature structural applications. During the first contract reporting period, silicon nitride turbine stators of the new design have shown considerably improved durability in testing to date. New design silicon nitride nose cones were fabricated by injection molding. Design studies on ceramic turbine rotors have shown that computed operating stresses can be withstood by dense silicon carbide and dense silicon nitride. Work on the stationary turbine project concentrated on materials evaluation and initial design of ceramic stator vanes. Physical property data were obtained on hot pressed silicon nitride.
