Abstract:

A study was undertaken to investigate the improvement of the venting characteristics for the Skylab environmental control system ECS condensate dump system. The appropriate test apparatus was assembled, and a systematic investigation was undertaken. Water venting experiments were conducted in the 4- by 6-ft Research Vacuum Chamber of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility. Nineteen nozzle configurations were tested, and a design which reduces the icing problem was found. A nozzle constructed from a 14-in.-diam tube with two 0.05-in.-diam orifices is compatible with the presently designed Skylab venting system, and icing during venting has been significantly reduced at pressures that would be encountered in spacecraft operation.
