The feasibility of a self-contained, portable shipboard unit to thermally crack JP-5 jet fuel was investigated. A bench scale cracking unit was designed and operated to obtain kinetic and physical operation data for use in design scaleup. The thermal cracking process was readily controlled to produce a product which had good flammability characteristics. A pilot scale design was completed which incorporated the bench scale results plus features known to be necessary in a shipboard unit. The purpose was to produce fire bomb fuel. A fire bomb simulator was designed and employed to test the ignition and burning characteristics of gelled petroleum fuels for fire bombs and to correlate the results with bomb drop performance.
