The objective of this investigation was to obtain preliminary information on the damage that results to a model silo closure when impacted by simulated ejecta from a blast crater. The debris impact loading condition was achieved by impacting one-third scale models of various closures considered in the Hard Rock Silo HRS program with a 22-12-inch-diameter spherical concrete projectile fired from a 2-foot-diameter horizontal shock tube. The impact velocity was approximately 300 fps. High-speed motion pictures were taken of the impact shots to verify the projectile velocity and to document the sequence of damage at impact.
