Abstract:

Tests were conducted to determine the effects of bullet impact on n-propyl nitrate. Seven types of ammunition were used 30 caliber ball, 50 caliber ball, 20-mm ball, 20-mm armor-piercing incendiary, 20-mm high-explosive incendiary, 7162-mm tracer, and a 20-mm flechette. The testing was accomplished in two phases. Phase I consisted of testing with the n-propyl nitrate contained in four-and six-quart thin-walled aluminum canisters. Phase II used four BLU-10B fire bomb casings 33-12 gallon capacity. The review of high speed film 2000 and 4000 frames per second indicated there were no detonations however, the 20-mm high-explosive incendiary rounds initiated burns. Author
