The document reports on the results of a program to improve both the reliability of argon ion laser systems and their overall operating efficiency and performance. The scope of this effort is two fold 1 to explore the potential of the anodic-bore laser tube design for long life, high power operation, and 2 to develop a compact, rugged, argon laser system for airborne applications. Emphasis was placed on obtaining experimental data and developing a better understanding of anodic-bore laser properties. An attempt has been made to describe more fully the plasma discharge and electric field boundary layers also the electrical, optical, and physical behavior of all key elements as a result of utilizing the anodic-bore principle. Operational parameters such as pressure, voltage, current, magnetic field, cathode temperature, rare gas fill, and optical mirror combinations were varied over wide ranges. This was done in an effort to optimize both optical output power and efficiency of electrical-to-output energy conversion. Author
