Abstract:

The primary scientific function of Buoy ALPHA Figure 1-1 during the North Pacific Study is to gather meteorological and oceanographic data. The meteorological data requirements for this experiment are wind velocity and dry temperature at 5, 10, and 15 meters above sea level, absolute moisture content, rainfall, radiation, and air pressure. Oceanographic data requirements include surface roughness, current velocity, and seawater temperature. Underwater measurements of temperature, depth, and conductivity are made at eight positions along the mooring line to a depth of 210 meters. Engineering data requirements comprise the remainder of the buoys sensor complement. The engineering measurements provide information which is used to establish hull integrity and proper operation of maritime safety equipment. Author
