Abstract:
The expansion feature of the transmittance T slidewire on the Cary Model 14 spectrophotometer, 0 to 1 T Full Scale, provides an extremely useful technique to measure the magnitude of small, yet significant energy leaks 1 T of sidesbands in interference filters. Of the several optical materials investigated, the optical wedge provided to be the best component to establish the 0 to 1 T range. It is insensitive to temperature changes, has excellent shelf life, is commercially available at a reasonable cost, and can be used over a wide wavelength range. In a test with a neutral density filter, good agreement existed between the values from the 0 to 1 T range and from the 0 to 100 T and 0 to 10 T ranges. The expansion technique takes advantage of the excellent photometric accuracy of the spectrophotometer by providing an improved readability of chart values. Author
