The report considers protection and energisation requirements for lightweight superconducting magnets for airborne magnetohydrodynamic MHD generators. Possible energisation systems are reviewed. A theoretical treatment of the thermal and electrical transients occurring after a persistent mode quench is derived and calculations to determine the number of shunts required in a particular case are presented.
