Abstract:

A program to determine the practicality of creating a plasma display panel for use as a storage display device in Air Force console applications was completed. Major emphasis was given to optimizing panel configurations for operation with localized memory at 60 lines per linear inch resolution 3600 sitessq. in.. A study of the effects of panel dimensions on electrical optical performance was conducted. Design parameters were established and fabrication of panels was begun. Difficulty was encountered in forming narrow electrode lines consistently. However, several experimental panels having nearly all continuous electrode lines were finally constructed to demonstrate the performance capabilities. A breadboard panel model with 256 X 256 lines at 60 lines per inch was fabricated. These panels can be dynamically addressed over the entire display area without crosstalk between firing sites can store information at each site separately for indefinite periods under powered conditions have selective erase capability and have a spot brightness greater than 70 foot lamberts and a contrast ratio better than 201. Plasma display panels seem to be practical and desirable for use in Air Force console applications and the development of a panel and display terminal with 512 X 512 lines at 60 per inch is recommended.
