The mathematical description of a millimeter wave image convertor is formulated. The converted image is described as either a spatial intensity distribution f2x, y or a spatial frequency distribution F2f sub x, f sub y, where f2x, y and F2f sub x, f sub y comprise a Fourier transform pair. An image evaluation criterion, expressed as a fidelity factor phi, is defined in terms of f2x, y or F2f sub x, f sub y. A knowledge of this factor for a given conversion system permits a description of the quality of the converted image. A realistic conversion system is postulated and analyzed to illustrate the application of the image evaluation criterion and the calculation of phi. A physical interpretation of phi is offered.
