Single-layer and double-layer, 8- to 14-micron antireflection coatings for Ge33Se55As12 glass were fabricated and evaluated. In addition, the transparency, vapor pressure, and behavior under CO2 laser radiation of Ge33Se55As12 glass was studied. Coatings were vacuum deposited by electron-beam heating. Hard and durable single-layer coatings of LaF3 were developed which could increase peak transmission to 90 percent between 8 and 10.5 microns. A strong absorption band in the glass, at 12.7 microns, degraded the transmission between 11 and 14 microns. With the exception of the low transmission caused by the glass absorption band the LaF3 and NdF3 coatings met the objectives of this program. Author
