Abstract:

The purpose of the following discussion is to survey development and utilization of the computer by highlighting two pressing problems, development of expandable languages and expandable systems. It is convenient to unfold these problems via chronological discussion, and to this end generation numbers have been assigned. This, admittedly, is artificial, but serves well as a vehicle for the intended presentation.
