Abstract:

The durability of epoxide adhesive bonds has been investigated under stress corrosion conditions. The following points have been elucidated. A silane pretreatment of aluminum adherends inhibits interfacial failure of amine cured epoxide resins presoaking of unstressed epoxide bonds reduces the induction period to stress corrosion cracking amines accelerate the normally slow corrosion of sluminum adherends bayerite appears to be formed on the adherend crack surface as a post cracking phenomenon and a possible mechanism for stress corrosion cracking is postulated.
