Abstract:

A survey has been conducted on all work which is relevant to the developing technology of superconducting electrical machines, and a compilation of all relevant references is presented. In addition, a list of all organizations presently doing research in this field is given, along with a description of the type of work being done. The general state-of-the-art of the important general areas of the technology is discussed. There are several problem areas new to electric machines, but none appear insurmountable. The most significant problem in the development of a superconducting dc homopolar machine is that of current collection. Refrigeration systems are presently available which are adequate for cooling superconducting machinery. Superconduction are presently available which can carry up to 100,000 amperessq. cm. Author
