Test results are presented for an investigation of carbon seal wear suing the RTD seal rig. The test machine employs a full-scale main shaft jet engine seal-the forward seal of the No. 2 bearing sump for the J-93 gas turbine engine. Data for a 410-hr test using a MIL-L-7808G lubricant showed mild oxidative deterioration of the lubricant with no evidence of significant carbon seal wear. Similar results were obtained with a MIL-L-25336 type lubricant which was tested for a period of 300 hr. The latter fluid is the high wear reference standard used by the Naval Air Propulsion Test Center in conjunction with a bench-type carbon seal wear tester. Author
