Analytical expressions, based on theoretical and empirical relationships, are presented which allow the calculation of the resolution limit of a given lens-image intensifier-film combination as a function of the input energy. Experimental data are presented for one-stage and two-stage tubes and selected films that agree well with predictions. A technique is presented for calculating the resolution of a backscatter-limited active night reconnaissance system. Comparisons are made showing that for resolutions less than 30 lpmm, an image intensifier camera has a superior resolution capability with 110 or less energy compared to conventional photography.
