Abstract:

Six preproduction type MS 2A042 stratified charge, multifuel, Texaco Combustion Process engines and one 4A084 engine were constructed and check tested with one of the two-cylinder engines run for a 500 hour endurance evaluation. Previous work with the prototype 2A042 TCP engine had revealed good multifuel capability at significantly reduced fuel consumption with all military fuels. Good endurance characteristics with exception of long term governor component durability on gasoline has also been demonstrated. Changes in cooling air direction requested by MERDC for compatibility with in-house work were incorporated in the preproduction engines. These engines all provided good multifuel operability. Fuel economy while better than the Military Standard engine was not as good as that of the TCP prototype, primarily due to the change in cooling. Additional work towards governor component durability is needed for prolonged operation with gasoline. Author
