Abstract:

A basic need of the Army of the future is to have the capability of obtaining accurate, real-time, and relevant atmospheric data for fire control, severe storm warning, trafficability, flood warning, aviation, weather forecasting, and other uses. Presently available equipment and techniques do not have the required capability. Remote atmospheric sensing is an approach that appears to offer at least a partial solution to the problem. The US Army Advanced Materiel Concepts Agency convened an ad hoc working group meeting 2-4 March 1970 to discuss both passive and active modes of acoustic, electromagnetic and IRoptical techniques, with emphasis on those approaches which appeared to be the most promising for use in a future land combat system. Conclusions indicate that while there are several hopeful approaches, it does not appear that remote sensing of the atmosphere will be able to furnish more than a part of the needed information, at least through 1990.
