Abstract:

A method is proposed to obtain relatively optimal reinforcements in a fiber reinforced composite membrane. An optimality condition for the fiber reinforcement is derived. The derivation is an adaption of one given in the literature for isotropic homogeneous materials. The optimality condition derived states that the specific strain energy divided by the specific number of fibers is a constant, for maximum stiffness at a given weight, and minimum weight for given stiffness. The resulting optimum is relative, since only optimization of the reinforcement is considered. Some numerical values for a boron-epoxy wedge in tension were computed.
