Full-scale blade forgings were used to obtain material property data, to determine the rain erosion characteristics of beryllium, and to evaluate the effects of combined loading on simulated dovetail specimens. Two simulated discs and one final design disc were manufactured and tested to determine the burst strength of beryllium discs. Beryllium shafts were also investigated to determine their strength capacity and failure characteristics under torsional loading conditions. Of the beryllium components investigated, the shafting appeared to be the most promising for gas turbine engine application. Author
