Abstract:

The study deals with the excitation of radiating fields by an evanescent primary field in the presence of a diffraction grating. The three-dimensional electromagnetic field problem of a beam of electrons passing parallel to the plane of the grating and perpendicular to the ruling is investigated and a formal solution is obtained for a grating of arbitrary profile. A sinusoidal profile is selected for further investigation, and numerical methods applied to obtain numerical results. The results of this analysis are presented graphically. The results show some interesting resonance and absorption phenomena in the magnitude of the scalar potential function coefficients for the scattered field as the normalized frequency is varied. In addition, the results show that the radiated fields are predominantly transverse electric except for a small range of observation angle near the vertical. Author
