Abstract:
The matched filter used in echo ranging is commonly based upon the approximation of the Doppler effect by a translation of the signal spectrum. Conditions under which this filter is most effective are found by setting up the filter response to a more exact echo waveform, expanding in powers of vc, where v is the range rate and c is the velocity of propagation, then looking for those relations which make the canonical response Woodwards function an accurate characterization.
