The Characteristic Energy Loss Spectra of Al and CdS by an Electron Reflection Technique.

The characteristic energy loss spectra of evaporated Al and vacuum-cleaved CdS were measured by an electron reflection technique. The energy distribution of electrons scattered by the specimen through 90 degrees was examined with a 127 degree electrostatic electron spectrometer. The loss spectrum of Al was in agreement with prior experiments. The energy losses of CdS were measured and tentatively interpreted as follows 1 6.9 and 18.6eV - band transitions from the valence and low-lying s or d bands respectively 2 12.0 and 38.6eV - excited volume plasma states of the bulk CdS 3 22.7 and 41.7eV - excited volume plasma states of an oxide layer.
