The effect of prestressing and surface removal SSR on the creep behavior of titanium 6Al-4V alloy was investigated. It was observed that PSR treatment reduces the transient as well as steady state creep rate of titanium 6Al-4V alloy. The best results were obtained by stressing the specimens to 100 ksi at room temperature. The improvement in the creep rate was observed at 550, 600, and 650F. At stresses approximately equal to the proportional limit at the test temperature, the creep rate obtained by SSR treatment is about the same as that of untreated specimens. However, as the test stress is decreased the difference between the creep rates increases rapidly. Author
