Manufacturing techniques were established for fabricating image intensifier tubes with 80-mm input and 40-mm output, suitable for interface with the 40-mm SEC camera tube. The manufacturing processes, techniques and controls necessary to fabricate a limited pilot production quantity of reproducible tubes were developed, and an unbalanced pilot production line was established. During the production development phase, a tube design was arrived at which offers excellent design characteristics. On-axis resolution exceeds 65 lpsmm and off-axis resolution is in excess of 40 lpsmm in both the wide-angle and narrow-angle modes. Distortion is minimal and the cutoff voltage is less than 2000 v. A number of difficulties were experienced during the actual production run in particular, tube background and gas development proved troublesome. However, the introduction of certain modifications in design and processes resulted in a number of full-specification tubes. Tube background was reduced as a result of a modified alkali path, and improved chrome oxide coating. Gas development was largely eliminated with the introduction of extended aging. The desired yielded has not been established. However, indications are that the design and processes arrived at by the end of the program should give a production yield in excess of 25. Author
