Abstract:

This report summarizes technical accomplishments during the RESEP II, Task 10.3 Task 4 Refractories Study. During the program, a heat treatment study was conducted resulting in the selection of 2900 C as the optimum heat treatment for Poco AXF grade graphite. This material was characterized by mechanical, physical ablation and plate slap properties. A plug nose tip design using this material was generated and evaluated both analytically and experimentally. Design criteria and evaluation covered all re-entry environments both benign and hostile. Biaxial testing was conducted at room and elevated temperatures to determine both failure envelopes and stress-strain relationships. A study of an experiment to thermostructurally fail graphite by a well understood and controlled technique was conducted.
