The report describes the design, fabrication, and testing of a TV pickup lens and an Eidophor projection lens within excess of 160 x 60 degrees anamorphic field of view. The lenses are used in a closed circuit TV system where the pickup rides on a scale model unprogrammed vehicle simulator and the scene is projected on a large spherical screen via the Eidophor projector. The objective is to produce a realistic visual simulation of the response of the vehicle to control by an operator. Major factors in the visual realism are resolution of the projected picture and scene brightness. The resulting lens systems have given the necessary brightness and do not materially affect the system resolution which is limited by the 1000 line TV system resolution. The extremes of the field of view are 180 x 70 degrees and the lenses have a maximum aperture of f5.6. The information content or number of resolution elements spread over the large field of view set a distinct limitation on realism of the visual simulation. The most logical area to strive for further system improvement appears to be TV resolution. The lens performance is such that a 2000 line TV system would just about match the lens resolution capability and greatly increase the realism of the scene. Author
