A description and report of the evaluation of a helmet-mounted tracking device is presented. The mounted device consisted of an one inch CRT combined with the appropriate optical system to enable the pilot to see the target at optical infinity. With this device the pilot could move his head freely, looking to the sides and up and down, without the error display leaving his visual field. The evaluation made under five different experimental conditions revealed that pilots tracking performance was at least 20 per cent better with the helmet-mounted device than with the conventional cockpit-mounted scope when required to detect and identify secondary targets not on the scope while tracking.
