Abstract:
The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office conducted a field oceanographic forecasting and analysis program in support of CANUS SLAMEX 2-64. Three oceanographers were assigned to COMCARDIV 16 aboard the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN to provide synoptic oceanographic analyses and forecasts tailored to the requirements of the exercise. In addition, two observer-trainees from the U.S. Fleet Weather Facility FWF, Norfolk, and FWF, Quonset Point, were indoctrinated in analysis and forecasting techniques. Bathythermograms BTs were to be taken every 4 hours by each of 3 destroyers accompanying the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN. During electronic emission control EMCON, BTs taken beyond visual range were to be radioed to overflying aircraft and carried to the LAKE CHAMPLAIN. Author
