Abstract:
Sea surface temperature and layer depth analyses from three cruises are compared to observations obtained from eight cruises transiting the ASWEPS area of interest. By comparisons of intensity and location of analyzed tongues to those observed, a quantitative measure of the analyses is made. Results indicate that the oceanographic analyses are sufficiently accurate in depicting the intensity and location of tongues having a 5F or greater temperature change. With regard to lesser features of the analyses, the intensity and axis fit is considered in need of improvement. Procedures for preparing oceanographic analyses appear basically correct in that the degree of complexity, amplitudes and wave lengths of tongues and number of perturbations are similar to those observed. Increased data from new data sources and introduction of more accurate sensors is expected to produce the desired reliabilities. In light of the experimental nature of these charts, it is concluded that present results are encouraging. Author
