Continuing work on the development of Asymmetrical Microstrip ASM for use in microwave couplers and other applications is described. The ASM is similar to ordinary microstrip except that the top ground plane is located within a few substrate thicknesses of the top of the substrate. In this location the top ground plane strongly interacts with the microwave circuit. ASM provides substantial savings in volume compared with ordinary microstrip, which requires that the top ground plane be placed sufficiently far from the substrate that there is negligible interaction. Theoretical and experimental results on the loss, phase velocity, and line impedance of ASM components are described. The procedure for designing a floating overlay coupler in ASM is described and examples provided. Experimental results on coupler sections are provided that confirm theoretical conclusions. The effects of moding in the ASM medium as well as techniques used to control the moding are outlined. Plans for the completion of the program through the development and fabrication of a multi-section 3 dB hybrid coupler are summarized. Author
