Abstract:

A direct application of mathematical optimization techniques was used to develop a numerical method of calculating minimum time aircraft maneuvers which are applicable to air-to-air combat. An alternate solution to the minimum time maneuver problem was derived using energy concepts. Both methods of solution were applied to test cases using actual aircraft performance data. The test results showed a close correlation between the two methods of solution. These results also indicated a possible method of accurately approximating a minimum time maneuver. It was concluded that both optimization methods are useful aids in investigating combat maneuvers and their application to additional test cases may provide information useful to the pilot, tactician and aircraft designer.
