Abstract:
A 37 m long spar buoy is described which, although primarily intended for specific accurate meteorological measurements, was designed as a very stable and rugged unmanned platform allowing a wide range of oceanographic and meteorological observations. It is equipped with a high-capacity, high-precision data acquisition and digital recording system and is now ready to receive a wide variety of meteorological and oceanographic probes in addition to its existing meteorological sensors. It is at present free-drifting but an anchoring device is being studied. At the moment, for operational reasons, the buoy is essentially self-recording, but the present small monitoring transmitter can be replaced by a standard medium-range data transmitting system.
