Equations are derived which relate the required signal power to the output signal-to-noise SN ratio for essentially all existing modulation methods both digital and analogue. This constitutes a meaningful measure of performance when fidelity of intelligibility identifies the user needs. The results clearly establish that performance, and therefore a preferred or optimum modulation method, is strongly dependent upon the required or desired output Sn ratio. The performance equations and curves may be utilized in conjunction with other ssystem requirements to arrive at a preferred modulation concept based upon some combined performance criterion or they may be employed directly to identify an optimum system based upon a minimum transmitter power requirement.
