The error control performance of a simple forward error correction FEC coding technique was tested with multilevel vestigial sideband VSB modulation and adaptive time-domain equalization on selected circuits of the General Electric DIAL COMM telephone network. The multilevel VSB modulation to achieve high bit rates and adaptive time-domain equalization to reduce intersymbol interference were provided by an experimental Bell System data set model X203. The FEC coding technique consisted of an interleaved 24, 12 code to correct random and burst errors. The detailed results of the tests are presented in the form of curves of the distribution of call error rates measured for the VSB modem with and without coding for selected channel bit rates, call durations, and paths through the DIAL COMM network. These curves are discussed and compared to corresponding curves derived from earlier tests of VSB and FSK modems on switched telephone circuits. Author
