Techniques for processing as-grown whisker mats of Al2O3 and beta-SiC were improved. Nonwhisker debris could not be eliminated from the Al2O3 whiskers, but was significantly reduced compared to previous processing. Similar debris was removed from the beta-SiC whisker mats. Total cost of processing of the beta-SiC whiskers was significantly lower than for the Al2O3. Tensile properties for an aligned composite containing 18 vo Al2O3 whiskers in an aluminum-2.5 silicon matrix were determined at orientations of 0, 10, 20, 45, and 90 degrees to the axis of whisker alignment. Tensile properties at 20 degrees to the whisker alignment were approximately twice those of the unreinforced matrix. Tensile properties at 45 degrees were similar to those at 90 degrees, both being greater than the matrix properties. The preparation of high-volume fraction composites containing up to 50 vo Al2O3 whiskers was shown to be feasible. Author
