Tests were conducted on a 9-inch-diameter solid hemispherical dome. The dome was buried in 20-30 Ottawa sand at various depths and was subjected to uniform static overpressures up to 300 psi. Pressures transmitted to the dome were measured by on-structure pressure gages and the total vertical load transmitted to the dome was measured by load cells supporting the dome base. In one series of tests the dome was fitted with a friction-reducing membrane. No membrane was used for the other test series. Results of these tests regarding the effect of depth of burial and dome surface condition on the loading of the dome structure are presented. Author
