Abstract:

The application of an electrical analog having continuous capacitance and resistance to problems of two-dimensional transient heat transfer is investigated. The specific application is that of two-dimensional transient heat transfer in composite solids subjected to time and space variant boundary conditions. The electric analog is described and modeling requirements and techniques are discussed. The effect of the experimental procedure on model response is investigated. Two specific applications of the electrical analog to composite solids are investigated, one is rectangular-triangular in shape with an internal void and the other is circular in cross-section. Both are subjected to time and space variant boundary conditions over a major portion of their boundary. Comparison of the experimental response with that computed by finite-difference numerical methods shows that the technique is sufficiently accurate for the solution of engineering problems. In addition, the speed and ease of application associated with the use of this electrical analog suggests that it is a superior method for the solution of two-dimensional heat transfer problems.
