The results of an evaluation of synthetic leathers commercially available in the United States are presented in this report. The three domestic synthetic leathers Corfam, Aztran, and Clarino were evaluated against the requirements of Federal Specification KK--271, Leather, Cattlehide, Strap, Vegetable-tanned. No government specifications currently exist that cover these three materials. Based on equivalent thicknesses, natural leather had a breaking strength twice that of the strongest synthetic leather tested Corfam. Synthetic leathers were more resistant to simulated outdoor weathering than natural leather. Synthetic leathers were also more stable than nateural letather after immersion in various test fluids. Of the synthetic leathers tested, Clarino was the most resistant to simulated and natural evnironmental exposure, including 6 months of outdoor aging in Panama. In general, synthetic leathers offer the Military user a range of inexpensive, uniform, lightweight materials comparable to natural leather, except for ultimate strength. Author-PL
