Transition Probabilities of Nitric Oxide Spectroscopic Systems.

In a spectral source of special design, the intensities of several red and IR bands of nitric oxide were compared to the intensities of vacuum UV transitions from the same upper states as the red and IR bands. The results were expressed as ratios of the corresponding transition moments branching ratios. A high-intensity electron beam source was constructed and the necessary electronic circuits developed to allow it to be used for lifetime measurements by a gating and a modulation technique. These two techniques were tested on excited levels of Ne I and II. They were used on nitric oxide to measure the lifetime of the D doublet Sigma state. A value of 28 nsec was found. That value, the branching ratio results, data from an absorption experiment by Bethke on the sigma system, and an upper limit obtained by Wray on the f number for the E doublet Sigma to C doublet Pi transition, enabled us to calculate the oscillator strengths of various bands. The uncertainties on the transition probability parameters of the nitric oxide systems were reviewed and future measurements proposed. Author
