Seven candidate repellents were evaluated on New Zealand White rabbits for their potential to cause skin and eye irritation. The data obtained serve as a basis for making the following recommendations concerning their potential use on humans. There are no restrictions for acute application to the human skin of ENT-31889 and ENT-16750. Irritation of human eyes is not expected if either of these compounds should accidentally get into the eyes, provided they are washed out as soon as possible. ENT-20574-aGa, ENT-24828-a and ENT-32447 should be used with extreme caution around the eyes and mucosa. ENT-20593 should be used with extreme caution and its use should be restricted to areas other than the face. ENT-32844 either should be used only on human skin found by examination to have no abrasions or may be used in clothing. Those compounds found to be irritating to the skin or to the eyes of rabbits should be resubmitted in the form and at the concentration of their intended use so that their irritation potential can be reexamined.
