Snap varactors which will deliver up to 800 mw at 12 GHz in a X 9 multiplier with 10 watts of input power have been developed. This was accomplished by mounting two matching varactor chips in series in a single microwave varactor package in such a way that package parasitics and thermal resistance were minimized. This approach takes advantage of the fact that for optimum efficiency, the diode snap time must be smaller than a half cycle at the multiplier output frequency. Although the low snap times required were not achieved, it was possible to maximize the diodes circuit performance by utilizing varactor chips which were selected for minimum snap time. Author
