The purpose of the Phase III Engine Test was to operate the engine for 500 hours under severe accelerated, marine environmental conditions and in accordance with a specified duty cycle, to access the comparative life of standard J79-8 engine combustion and turbine section components as compared with similar components protected with various ceramic and diffused aluminum coatings. The compressor section was to be evaluated as to the improved corrosion resistance afforded by the introduction of new blade and vane materials, new vane shroud designs, new inlet guide vane bearing materials and the application of Nubelon H and Sermetel W paint to aluminum and steel compressor section components.
