Abstract:

The high Reynolds numbers of geophysical flows indicate that one should expect strong intermittency in the production of turbulence. One should therefore expect intermittency of exchange of energy between modes of motion, and the fluxes may be principally carried by sporadic events. The boundary layer is the region of high turbulence production and needs to be observed intensively with a view towards obtaining a further understanding of couplings between modes of motion and the parameters which can provide information about the frequency of occurrence and intensity of such couplings.
