A metallurgical investigation of the failure mechanisms which operate in bearing steels during cyclic stressing in rolling contact has been in progress since March 1964. This report covers observations made periodically during endurance testing on the inner ring surfaces of 6309 size ball bearings. Particular attention was paid to characteristic surface defects i.e. dents and pits which formed during running and their influence on initiation and propagation of spalling type failures. Subsurface observations were made at the end of selected test runs in the vicinity of these defects in an effort to determine what structural changes occur and how these changes affect the failure mechanism.
