In response to a requirement of the U. S. Naval Ship Research and Development Laboratory for spot checks of environmental conditions in several ports, a series of brief measurements were undertaken by Applied Research Laboratories. The parameters of temperature, salinity, conductivity, visibility, water currents, tides, sound speed, and ambient acoustical noise were measured in San Diego and Long Beach, California, in Balboa and Cristobal, Panama Canal Zone, and in Norfolk, Virginia. Bottom samples and water samples were obtained in these ports, and acoustic propagation was also investigated. Author
